Required
equipment:
BladderScan
instrument
Sontac®
gel pads or ultrasound gel
Tissue
Alcohol
preps or germicidal wipes
Procedure:
Clean
and disinfect scanhead.
Select
appropriate gender setting. Use the female option ONLY
for female patients who have NOT had a hysterectomy.
Make
sure the patient is comfortably situated for the scan,
either supine or sitting in a reclined position. The most
accurate results are obtained when the patient is in a
supine position.
Apply
ultrasound gel or gel pad.
Place
the scanhead midline on the patient's abdomen, approximately
one inch (3 cm) above the symphysis pubis (pubic bone).
Aim the scanhead so it projects ultrasound waves toward
the expected location of the bladder for most patients,
this means aiming slightly downward, toward the coccyx
(tail bone).
Press
and release the scan button. Be sure to hold the instrument
steady until the scan is complete, and the bladder volume
measurement is displayed on the instrument's LCD screen.
Use
the aiming icon to verify that the instrument was properly
aimed during the scan. If necessary, repeat the scan until
you are satisfied that the scanhead was properly aimed
and the displayed measurement is accurate.
Note:
If you are measuring post-void residual (PVR), have the
patient void 10 to 15 minutes before the scan is performed.
